Alpha Incident

Rating: 2.8/5 (28 votes cast)

Alpha Incident (1978)

Director: Bill Rebane
Runtime: 95 min

Do you trust your Government? The Hex doesn’t! When Space Science and Railroads meet – weapons ready space viruses are the obvious culprit...except you are on a rolling train instead of a secure underground Government laboratory. Keystone Cops bungle the scene and lay the blueprint for the Department of Homeland Security. A certain three lettered agency seems to be more occupied with illegal moonshine than the safety of the human race. Picture Robert Wise spilling his drink. Be warned. Amazingly relevant.

Angel of Death

Rating: 2.5/5 (30 votes cast)

Angel of Death (1987)

aka Commando Mengele
Dircetor: Andrea Bianchi
Writer: Jesus Franco, Georges Friedland
Starring: Christopher Mitchum, Suzan Andrews, Fernando Rey, Howard Vernon, Dora Doll

Christopher Mitchum - the OTHER, other Mitchum - stars in this Jess Franco penned Nazi oddity-de-force. Strong vampire overtones as a Van Helsing like Jewish commando team hunts out Josef Mengele - who has survived WWII and is now covertly continuing bizarre human experimentation including virgin impregnations that may...or may not....be Hitler. Just one of the many heavy handed setups that are strangely never followed through (Franco was reportedly 'let go' during production so there may be some legit excuses for continuity issues)....no matter, because we have neglected to mention that Mengele has an army of kung fu experts....that do battle with the Jewish commando team...WHO ARE KUNG FU EXPERTS! We know...amazing coincidence!!! Just keep in mind, as par for the course in this film, they may...or may not....actually battle with kung fu. Designer jeans and circuses - it just HAS to be visionary, right? Jess Franco and Nazis....like peanut butter and jelly!!

Bare Knuckles

Bare Knuckles (1977)

Director: Don Edmonds
Starring: Robert Viharo, Sherry Jackson, Michael Heit, Gloria Hendry, John Daniels

IIlsa director Don Edmonds brings us some sweet 70's grindhouse action!! Unsung B-movie powerhouse Robert Viharo brings down the house as bounty hunter Zachary Kane in this gritty urban street fighter epic. Sometimes other people just manage to say it best: from IMDB:

"A bounty hunter in Los Angeles sets out to track down and stop a masked serial killer who murders women by using kung-fu moves."

That's pretty much all you need to know. Just let us add that the action, music, scenery and tone are just about perfect! It's Seedy, it's 70's and it totally and completely delivers the goods. Make sure the popcorn is hot and the beer is cold because "Zack and Black--Manhunters...Back to Back!"

What if Robert Mitchum was Snake Plisskin? But it ended up being his son Jim Mitchum...and it wasn't the future...and the government wasn't at stake...but a whole lotta NYC punks needed some discipline! 70s siege movie extraordinaire. Massive ensemble cast including a heavily medicated Ray Milland. Thank god there were no meteors or mudslides... Lost Canadian 70s gem.

Car Crash

Car Crash (1980)

Italy
Director: Antonio Margheriti
Starring: Joey Travolta, Ana Obregón, Vittorio Mezzogiorno, John Steiner

Margheriti MACH 2!!!! That's right - Antonio Margheriti tackles the world of car racing as only he can...the great title sequence might lead you to believe that this story has a time travel component as well...but we think they just got a little carried away with the stock footage. Who knows, maybe it WAS a meticulously constructed time travel tale and all the SciFi elements got chopped for the US release - no matter, it seems to be primarily about stock car racing. A pretty standard tale; you have the underdog hotshot car racers, the girl and bag guys that want races thrown...but add Joey Travolta in the lead role and, whew, things just always seems a little, well...off...like, a weird edge that's hard to describe. Somebody sure did decide to put all their starpower eggs in a strange basket! It must've sounded great at investor clam bakes we suppose...Margheriti is always a fun trip though, and Car Crash is no exception. Racing aficionados trying to place all the found footage to actual race car classes and eras will have a fun drinking game on their hands!

Cut-Throats Nine

Cut-Throats Nine (1972)

Spain
aka Condenados a vivir, Bronson's Revenge
Director: Joaquín Luis Romero Marchent

Commonly referred to as “the most violent western EVER filmed”, this incredibly hard to find film actually lives up to the claim. Stunning cinematography makes hay of its exploitation roots. A tough as nails Sergeant is transporting seven hardcore criminals AND his nubile young daughter across the ‘western mountains’...Whats that? Yea, not the sharpest plan you say? Anyway, they get ambushed by gold seeking robbers and lose the transport so the Sergeant does the obvious thing: chain up the scary assed criminals to himself and his daughter...but it gets better! The chains turn out to be solid gold!!! We say ‘Awesome!’ and you can put the film's claim and that plot device together for an idea of what’s ahead...although the Hex feels ‘Most Vicious Western’ might be more accurate. The superb filmmaking of this obscure 1972 exploitation pic puts it head and shoulders above the rest--stop crying and run home to your mommy with your ‘G’ Rated Fulci western’s!

Death Car on the Freeway

Death Car on the Freeway (1979)

aka Wheels of Death
Director: Hal Needham
Starring: Shelley Hack, George Hamilton, Frank Gorshin, Peter Graves, Dinah Shore, Abe Vigoda, Morgan Brittany

Hal Needham is somewhat of a religion here at the Hex....When the world gets a little too crazy, it always seems like a healthy dose of Megaforce can always be counted on to restore the equilibrium....It is with that in mind that we proudly present his made for TV psycho van-de-force, Death Car on the Freeway. An amazing cast (Abe Vigoda AND Dinah Shore!!) brings to life the perfect vehicle for Needham's stunt background. The straightforward plot - A psycho in a 70s van is vehicle manslaughter-ing women on the freeway - finds its real footing with some tremendous car crashing and stuntwork. That and the fact the this psycho blasts mystery heavy metal on an dashboard 8 track player before he kills is priceless! Show this one to the kiddies to remind 'em how it used to be done, back when people risked more that carpel tunnel syndrome on a computer mouse to bring screen thrills to life! Needham's comments on the news cycle's hunger for violence rings truer than ever today - keep an eye our for his cameo as the driving instructor (wearing his staple silver Firebird jacket!!!)

Ok, it's hard to find any info on this one, it seems pretty homebrew...but the most elaborate damn homebrew we've ever seen! Another weird 80's thing where all these interesting mash ups--Logan's Run, Brave New World, Mad Max--suddenly turn into camouflaged guys duke-ing it out in Central America. Dimension 5

Rating: 2.7/5 (19 votes cast)

Dimension 5 (1966)

Director: Franklin Adreon
Starring: Jeffrey Hunter, France Nuyen, Harold Sakata

One of the more interesting and early James Bond knock offs...Dimension 5 dusts off a Red Scare script and tosses it into a James Bond-esque universe with all the subtly of Hal Needham's Megaforce. Jeffrey Hunter seems to phone the Justin Power role in between happy hours, but that somehow seems appropriate for an International secret agent with a time travel belt. You would be jaded too if could just go back 5 minutes whenever you felt like it...Power squares off against Red China's main kingpin, Big Buddha…played by real Bond alumni Harold "Oddjob" Sakata. Justin Power--sure he's a suave less misogynist jerk...and yea, he can’t sleuth his way out of a Hong Kong Mafia Bar...but, hey, he's the guy with the time travel belt! Jeffrey Hunter--who also starred in the dynamite film, Brainstorm (directed by William "Cannon" Conrad)--ended his promising career after taking a mysterious fatal fall in his own house 4 years later.

Epic women's-compound modern western revenge story...this film pushed some serious buttons and will leave the normals in a stunned state of shock. Godspeed we say!!!! Firepower is a drinking game. Each time something explodes or bursts into flames you must take a shot...ten minutes in...you're WASTED!!! This is a rare Michael Winner 70's effort with no Bronson in sight. The ultimate replacement recipe equals James Coburn, O.J. Simpson and Billy Barty. Force: Five

Force: Five (1981)

Director: Robert Clouse
Starring: Joe Lewis, Bong Soo Han, Sonny Barnes, Richard Norton

Director Robert Clouse - who would later go on to shake the pillars of cinema with GYMKATA - lays his trademark groundwork for tightly plotted, well-acted, deep, original, though-provoking narratives with Force: Five! Martial arts experts/religious fanatics go to some island to rescue somebody's very rich daughter from some other religious fanatics who are comprised of....wait for it......an army of martial arts experts! Funny how that always works out.

Seriously though, as far as hilarious, nonsensical, non-wire work American martial arts films goes....this is non stop fun that can't be beat.....besides religious fanatics are always creepy and this film's strange open ending is really, well, something.....who does win in a battle of religious fanatics? It's hard to really draw a bead on where the filmmakers were really coming from on this one and that's just part of its creepy, cheezy charm! These movies were seemingly churned out more than all the Nurse, Doberman and Women's Prison films combined!

More Al Adamson and this time its one of his rarer and definitely more inspired works....Hell's Bloody Devils is a masterpiece of twisted and determined vision. Rumors fly as to how long this film was in production....movies and filmmakers like this are what fuel the modern day Jim Van Bebbers to provoke through chemistry fueled celluloid. Seriously – name another Nazi outlaw biker movie that actually contains real honest to god Nazi's? Impulse (1974)

aka I Love to Kill, Want a Ride, Little Girl?
Director: William Grefe
Starring: William Shatner, Ruth Roman, Jennifer Bishop, Kim Nicholas, James Dobson, Harold Sakata

This is the Pinnacle...the Epoch...the Zenith of William Shatner cocaine excess. While no actual snow gets hoovered onscreen, it’s quite apparent that the coke influence permeated every corner of this cinematic gem. A 70's update of Night of the Hunter sans religious overtones--Shatner delivers a completely unhinged performance as Matt Stone that seriously defies description. His damaged childhood paves the path to an adult lothario preying on rich widows...and what would have been a pretty standard and well made thriller is transformed into a complete classic by Shatner. Maneaters are Loose (1978)

Director: Timothy Galfas
Starring: Tom Skerritt, Steve Forrest, G.D. Spradlin, Harry Morgan, Frank Marth, Dabney Coleman

Totally Dynamite!!! Veteran 70's TV creators bring this lost made-for-TV movie to life in a big way. If you were alive during the 70's watching television then this will cause a tsunami of nostalgia. Great 70's ensemble TV guest star cast! --Tom Skerrit, Harry Morgan, Dabney Coleman, Steve Forrest...the list goes on! A bitter drunk unleashes a slew of wild animals on an unsuspecting California suburb. We know, we know...it's already a winner!!! Containing bizarre split screen effects, Steve Forrest's amazing gigantic hair and INCREDIBLE amounts of plot padding... It's weird to watch 70's television and be shocked at the amount of drinking and sex that was going on in primetime -- we have really swung back to the crazy puritans more than realized. Did we mention that while, yes, the antagonist IS a bitter drunk, well, everyone else is completely drunk too...constantly!! There isn't exactly a whole lot of animal attacking going in this, but that's OK...give it a chance because as a time capsule it just works. Another forgotten movie in the television end of the Man vs Nature cycle...back when film and television were engaged in a total and constant cyclical balance! The Peace Killers (1971)

Director: Douglas Schwartz
Starring: Clint Ritchie, Jess Walton, Paul Prokop, Michael Ontkean, Lavelle Roby, Nino Candido, Jon Hill, Gary Morgan

Ultra obscure biker film that was heretofore completely off our radar.....its a full blown, straight up Bikers-VS-Hippies film circa 1971. If that doesn't perk you up, then you have no pulse. We aren't talking a biker film with hippies in it either....we really mean BIKERS VS HIPPIES.....like King Kong VS Godzilla but between bikers and hippies! Simple, pure and beautiful. The movie had a budget and it shows.....Turns out the Hippies do have a breaking point. By the time the bloodlust gets turned up to 11 and the third warring faction arrives, things start going insane. To say this movie comes highly recommended is an absurd understatement indeed! Planet of Horrors (1981)

Director: Bruce D. Clark
Starring: Eddie Albert, Erin Moran, Zalman King, Robert Englund, Sid Haig

The best of the US Alien ripoofs and the hands down best exploitation effort that came out of the New World Pictures waning years equals a film that has grown to legendary status....James Cameron on B Unit and a modern wet dream cult cast - Eddie Albert, Zalman King, Robert Englund, Sid Haig and Erin Moran in a great Happy Days stereotype busting role. This movie was a late night cable mainstay in the early 80s and has aged like a fine wine. Super bloody and super grim...this legitimate SciFi epic is due for a revisting to get the respect it so richly deserves...but don't let all this gushing about the excellent acting, story, tone and alien existentialism take away from the fact that this is a hardcore exploitation flick of the first magnitude...the extended alien monster rape scene alone will clear the place of the people with weaker constitutions. GIve this one a serious watch - you'll be glad you did...

This film is very much in honor of William Girdler--quite a master and visionary filmmaker...he was cut down in his prime due to a helicopter accident while scouting locations. Most famous for his Man vs Nature trilogy: Grizzly, Day of the Animals and The Manitou (the last being more of a white man VS nature...) -- Grizzly alone testifies for his film mastery...BUT, Project:Kill was his real world political commentary sans nature...slipped in Manchurian style! Pulgasari (1985)

North Korea
Director: Chong Gon Jo, Sang-ok Shin
Starring: Chang Son Hui, Ham Gi Sop, Jong-uk Ri, Gwon Ri

How to make a giant monster movie when you rule your own Communist country? Well, for starters you 'hire' a prominent director you kidnapped from the neighboring country...and then you use your army for large extra scenes! At least thats how Kim Jong Il rolled when he set out to produce Pulgasari....

Not you average giant monster movie....its more of a political period piece potboiler meets Pokemon on a Gollum high. Pulgasari is birthed from the hands of a common prisoner and goes on to lead the oppressed peasants in a revolt against their tyrannical overlord - leading to some great contests of strength and will. Believe us though when we say there is A LOT of planning, speculation and theorizing about revolt before it gets off the ground - all while a cute little Pulgasari grows and grows......but Pulgasari keeps growing and growing on an insatiable diet of iron. Apparently, saving the village from tyranny is not enough and he quickly turns on the peasants themselves teaching the audience that ...well....whatever....we'll leave the forced political overtones to more competent scholars and Battlefield Earth fans....

Somehow a portion of the Toho technical staff was roped into this so the giant monster and miniature effects are top shelf....that story alone probably warrants its own documentary. All in all a very interesting piece of modern film history. We do have to wonder what sort of film GWB would make if he were so inclined....would cowboy chapped giant bottles of beer and Psychlos be involved?

Puppet on a Chain (1971)

Director: Geoffrey Reeve
Writer: Allister MacLean
Starring: Sven-Bertil Taube, Barbara Parkins, Alexander Knox, Patrick Allen, Vladek Sheybal

Another early 70's Allister MacLean tour de force. This along with Fear is the Key contain two of the best chase scenes ever committed to film. Puppet on a Chain is dripping with action, heroin, LSD, action, LSD and a totally kick ass boat chase....did we mention LSD? Stuffy fans of MacLean's novel hated this film at the time...too bad for them! In between all the action, mystery, intrigue, heroin, LSD and boats, they manage to cram in some booze and red light districts! DAMMIT we love this film! Seriously though this film perfectly filled the gap left by a collapsed James Bond franchise in 1972.....definitely worthy!

The Ransom

Rating: 2.9/5 (15 votes cast)

The Ransom (1977)

aka Maniac!, Assault on Paradise, The Town That Cried Terror Director: Richard Compton
Starring: Oliver Reed, Deborah Raffin, James Mitchum, Stuart Whitman, John Ireland, Paul Koslo

Another entry in our 'Visibly Drunk' series (See Wrath of God)......Welcome to our new favorite Oliver Reed oddity!! A rogue Native American is plucking off townsfolk (and cops!) with a high-powered hunting bow and demanding ransom from the towns feudal lord. Said plutocrat hires drunk Oliver Reed to take care o' bidness! We should mention that everyone else in the entire film (especially Stuart Whitman!!) looks incredibly hung over throughout. We can only fantasize about the wild after hours escapes Reed took the cast on every single night! Some mild - and sometimes mildly amusing - action, sex and plot twists keeps things humming along. The perfect film for all those no-drinking new years resolutions!

Supertrain - pilot

Rating: 2.7/5 (21 votes cast)

Supertrain - pilot (1979)

aka Express to Terror
Producer: Dan Curtis
Director: Dan Curtis
Starring: Broderick Crawford, George Hamilton, Steve Lawrence, Don Meredith, Stella Stevens

What do you get when you mix Dan Curtis with The Love Boat? A really weird Love Boat.... and instead of a boat, its set on a futuristic cross country luxury train...and instead of love there is murder!!! With its huge ensemble casts and slightly askew take - this would have been preferable to the coke frosted boat series had it come first. As par for the course with 70s TV, there is alot of drinking, sex, disco and satin......Curtis - a legendary curmudgeon - left a trail of epic tales regarding this pilot. 24 hour work shifts, mass firings and budget spirals...still, it all ultimately works when viewed outside the shadow of television circa 1979.

Norliss Tapes or Night Stalker this ain't....but its a worthwhile look at one of our favorite television prodigy's 70s swansong.

Trapped

Rating: 2.5/5 (27 votes cast)

Trapped (1973)

Director: Frank De Felitta
Starring: James Brolin, Susan Clark, Earl Holliman, Robert Hooks

Surprisingly brutal television take on the Doberman film rage of the time....this movie definitely out - crazies the theatrical scene proving, once again, that the early 70s movie of the week scene was really firing on all cylinders to compete with cinemas. Super suave James Brolin (smoking a cigarette in a holder!) gets mugged in a groovy indoor mall (at the height of their rage) men's room......right before closing........RIGHT before the viscous guard dogs are set loose to protect things overnight! Its always the simple plots that are the most riveting - when handled right....and they really had a firm grasp on this one. One does wonder however, just how many pot smoking teen's mauled bodies were morgued out of that mall every Sunday due to their zero tolerance security system?.....Oh yes, and we would be remiss if we didn't mention that writer director Frank De Felitta also penned Zero Population Growth, which is very near and dear to the HEX.

What Waits Below (1984)

UK
aka Secrets of the Phantom Caverns
Director: Don Sharp
Starring: Robert Powell, Timothy Bottoms, Lisa Blount, Richard Johnson, Anne Heywood, A.C. Weary, Liam Sullivan, Jackson Bostwick, Richard Beauchamp

All right! The Hex brings you Don Sharp - Hammer Studio veteran (The Kiss of the Vampire, The Face of Fu Manchu , Rasputin: The Mad Monk etc.) and Psychomania mastermind - and his low-budget 80's action creeper What Waits Below! Well what? What does wait below? Well, you'll just have to wait. It builds slowly but be patient brothers and sisters...it pays off and the solid cast, creative plot and special effects make it well worth the wait.
