Godspeed You! Black Emperor (1976)
Japan
aka Goddo supiido yuu! Burakku emparaa
Director: Mitsuo Yanagimachi
Ok, it's pretty much impossible to live up to a title like Godspeed You! Black Emperor but this is nonetheless a truly one of a kind documentary. Filmmaker Mitsuo Yanagimachi follows the exploits of the "Black Emperors", a rebellious young Japanese motorcycle gang. The gang loves to ride but is full of dichotomies: embracing Nazi imagery one minute and running home to mommie at the slightest hint of trouble the next. Somehow these pop culture damaged kids, combined with an equally meandering storyline and shot with a low budget b/w video news camera, create a sort of weird, mesmerizing and almost otherwordly viewing experience. Or I don't know, maybe its just what we've been smoking...

The 186th generation video qualioty totally adds a mystique to this one.....really weird when you take and emulate a rebelious movement without the underlying lynchpins of it......similar to the suburban punk movement in the early 80s here.....
