The Female Bunch (1969)
Director: Al Adamson
Starring: Russ Tamblyn, Jennifer Bishop, Lon Chaney Jr., Alesha Lee
Wanton. Satanic. Drug Abuse... Nasty = Enticing. Shocking = Erotic. Heroin = Lesbian Sex! This film is pure, unhinged Al Adamson. Expect your guests to leave in a kerfulffle!! Epic women's-compound modern western revenge story...this film pushed some serious buttons and will leave the normals in a stunned state of shock. Godspeed we say!!!! Russ Tamblyn's best role ever...this is seriously fucked-up and amazing shit--topped only by Adamson’s own Angel's Wild Women. Adamson was ultimately found murdered and buried in the foundation of his own hot tub. Shot on location at Manson’s Spahn Ranch.

This movie actually reminded me of Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill more than anything else, like it was a variety of Russ Meyer's piece, only made 4 years later. It's even reminiscent of his directing. Apparently, as can be gleaned from the title, it was probably intended as kind of a feminist commentary on The Wild Bunch. As for "drug cinema" it really isn't. On the whole, there is nothing of the sensual depravity and decadence you'd expect from that genre. Oh, yeah, there's a single, short, pretty hot lesbian shoot up scene, but it's more than balanced by the corny western style bar fights and recurring tequila drunk cheering for no good reason. It takes place somewhere on the Mexican border, so there is a lot of desert dust and mounted beauties galloping across the Rio Grande in this movie. In other words, if violent women in jodphurs beating up helpless men in strawfilled barns is your thing, you'll love this one. Not even the two allegedly heroin addicted ladies mind the streneous physical exercise of constant hard riding the slightest. Unfortnately, the film quality is in pretty bad shape, but I guess that's a minor issue if you like this kind of exploitation flicks . My major trouble with it is the - in my oponion - misleading categorization of this movie. As stated, it's not sleazy glam "drug cinema", it's more a case of violent feminist amazons going desperado, killing off a few pathetic members of the male species in the process.

Oh, I forgot. There is positively no satanism in it either.

The Satanism we mentioned was in spirit only.........however, we feel its pretty damn sleazy. The point being - that real actual sleaze isn't fun OR glamorous.......only adding to the fact was that it really seems like Adamson was really living the life. You just can't manufacture that kind of realism (the spirit and tone, not the story). The closest modern equivalent would probably be any Jim Van Bebber film.....
